The essentials of a Press Kit

Many people have heard the term “press kit”, but does everyone know what it means?

A press kit, or also known as a media kit, is something that contains information about a business or a product. Essentially it is like a resume for a company. It discusses who they are, what they do, some of their work, and what sets them apart. The information is meant to answer any and all questions the media, investors, or potential clients may have.

The question is now, what exactly goes into a press kit?

This will vary depending on the situation and the audience in which the press kit is used for. Here is a list of ideas I found from a tip website that can be included into a press kit for many different scenarios.

1. Letter of introduction.

2. Information on the company.

3. Product and service information.

4. Recent press publications and articles.

5. Press releases.

6. Photos.

7. Sample news story.

8. Frequently asked questions.

9. Significant statistics specific to your industry.

10. Missions, goals, and objectives.

There are many more examples, but these are a good start. Also, it is best not to include too many items as you don’t want to overload the media or client.

Make your press kit stand out from the rest. Consider the way you are packaging it together. Be creative and think outside the box. This will be the first thing the editor or client will see.

Be sure to follow up. The media is constantly getting kits and pitches, and maybe all it takes is for you to make that phone call to get your story published.

Remember, press kits are primarily for information. No need to go overboard in the creative department, as this is simply to inform your audience about your company. Start with the simple items you already may have, then create the rest.
