Why visuals matter.

Sometimes copy just can’t do the job. You need more to tell the story. Infographics can help you out.

People who love to write can be easily intimidated when they are told they need a visual component to his or her story. “I just know how to write! Photos and infographics aren’t my thing.” Well, maybe this is just something I would say!

You don’t realize how powerful visuals until you add them. Infographics don’t need to be anything too detailed or extravagant, but something that can help you lay out the story to your audience in easier terms. They are colorful and creative, yet simple. An infographic is there to grab the reader’s attention and understand the message in just a glance.

ImageThis one is making a dig at not being social media trendy. The image is not complicated, but it is fun to look at and gets the point across. It is engaging to the audience and incorporates a little humor.

If you are like me, you have a tough time thinking visually. This is the first step. I found a blog post that actually offers some tips to start thinking visually. Apparently we can train our minds! Here are a few:

1. Think in terms of small pieces of information, such as simple quotes or phrases.

2. Think numbers. People love to engage with numbers and it makes things easier to follow along with. “10 reasons why”, “my top 5 favorite”…

3. Make sketches. Don’t dive into the big picture off the bat. Think of simple visuals to get your brain going.

4. Publish it. Although it may not be perfect, it is nice to get it out there and get some feedback. This is what helps you get better!

Another tip I have is to take a look at a bunch of different inforgraphics people have created. Don’t copy them, but get a good feel for the style and purpose.
